I know about dowry is : Money or property brought by a bride to her husband at marriage

Can you please elaborate the Dowry law under IPC?
Also, is it that no-one can claim dowry after 7Yrs. of marriage?

As per Dowry Law is concerned there is no definition of Dowry under IPC. Dowry is covered by Dowry Prohibition Act, which was passed exclusively to curb the problem of Dowry in the Society, but unfortunately this Act was not executed properly and hence the problem and its consequences are as such rather in more brutal way than earlier.

Indian Penal Code is not dealing directly in dowry.

Section 304 B speaks that if a woman dies with in seven years of her marriage and such death does not occur under normal circumstances. then it is considered as Dowry Death. Further more to prove it as dowry death it must also be shown that soon before her death she was subjected to cruelty or harassment by her husband or any relative of her husband for any demand for dowry. Cruelty may be Physical or mental.Even if the woman commit suicide resulting out of cruelty it is also considered as dowry death.

IPC gives Punishment of Seven Years or Imprisonment for Life with fine for this offence.


Section 498 A of IPC deals with Cruelty it speaks Whoever, being the husband or the relative of the husband of a woman, subjects such woman to cruelty. Either by torturing or giving him mental cruelty they shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years and shall also be liable to fine.



Dowry can be calimed at any moment but, as per law if woman dies under doubtful circumstances after seven years of her marriage. Her Death is not considered as death due to dowry.
